It’s been an interesting day, kids.

One of the things I do from time to time is drive people from Point A to Point B. It gets me out of the house, and I make a little pocket change to buy the occasional doodad.

So, earlier tonight, I picked up a bunch of young ladies, college freshmen, at a popular local intersection, 14th and Ohio in Lawrence. More than the recommended jumped in, to my dismay, and I gave them a lift over to McDonald’s for a festive Friday night dinner.  These girls were all under 21, and had been drinking. Some more than others.

After that ride, I had one of my regular passengers ping me to give him a ride to work, and I was grateful to see him after the experience I had just had with those young ladies.

I went offline after that, went home and woke up gramma from a nap and took her out for dinner (a good one, too, by the way. Good food matters. )

I dropped her off at home after we had out dinner, and my intent was to go watch Dane play with the Lawrence High Marching Band. So I drove around some more.

And then I got a ping.

I’ve often found myself fascinated by puzzles. Some I love to tackle. Others, I run away as quick as my legs can carry me… but enough about the Rubik’s Cube.

There are the old nail puzzles, and other old style “farm” puzzles made of metal and wood.

There are logic puzzles and math puzzles.

I guess my point is to jump into those. I remember growing up and heading over to the library where I’d grab a copy of Games magazine and tinker around with the puzzles, try and see some mysterious answer that would only be revealed if I could put the logic together.

I’m sitting here, just kind of kicking back on a Wednesday night, watching a little tube. I’ll be heading upstairs in a few minutes to read a bit more.

I’ve found a nifty little application, or maybe a combination of applications that help me deal with my predilection to distraction. I have a problem staying focused from time to time, but there’s a technique that helps me out. It’s called the sprint reading technique that quickly flashes one word on the screen at the same place each time. I’m pretty comfortable at 550 to 600 words per minute.

So, yeah, I’m using Calibre to convert pdf files to epub files, then I open up the epub files in Dynamic Reader and set it up the way I like it.

Makes it a lot easier to read more in a shorter amount of time with greater retention.

Sounds like the kind of thing that could be helpful one day.

Give it a shot. Learning how to read faster with greater retention is a great little skill to have, and I had the benefit of learning a bit about it back when I was in my early days of college back in the summer of ’81.

I’d teach my class, and, time permitting, I’d go over to Tower 2 and head to the top, to a little place called WIndows on the World for a beer before I had to Laguardia or Kenedy for my flight home.

That’s not going to happen anymore.

Some terrible things happened on that day, and that led to a number of other terrible things.

I’m not a fan of war.

I’m not too busy. I might get in the car before the game and get some people to their intended destinations, but other than that, no real plans other than watching the game.

My team is not having a very good game tonight from a penalty perspective.

They’re currently down 3 points late in the third quarter.

I have a feeling the Chiefs will put up a good fight, but likely fall on the road. Patriots are the reigning Superbowl champions, and they make fewer mistakes.

As I write this another hurricane is bearing down on the coast of Florida. Irma. She’s already taken out the island of Barbuda with 95% of the buildings destroyed. Terrible destruction.

And now we wait, and watch to once again become witnesses to Mother Nature’s fury.
