Day 19,910

It’s a basketball game kind of night here at the residence. Kansas got their game together and succeeded in their game against Clemson, moving on to the Elite 8. Right now I’m watching the Duke-Syracuse game, as Kansas will play one of these teams on Sunday for a chance to advance to the Final Four. Kansas hasn’t been back to the Final Four in a few years.

To be honest, I’m still a bit under the weather. This thing that is going on kicked my butt a little bit, but kicked my wife’s butt, then came back around to kick again while she was down.

We had some pretty high hopes for getting some things done over the spring break, but between runs to Salina to see my mom, Dane picking up this bug on his band trip, and some other things, this hasn’t been nearly as productive as we would have liked it to be (exception: Gracie. That girl has made a dent in her barn project and made about 16 quilts).

I wanted to get my writing in so I could at least get that thing done. I haven’t been the patron saint of productivity, but I can get my blog entry in. Two hundred words is a manageable number. I can do this. I just did this… and I think I’m coming up on a year.

Day 19,909

Thursday night out here in rural Douglas County. We’re watching the K-State/Kentucky Sweet 16 matchup, and listening to a sewing machine.

Gracie really likes her sewing machine.

We’re under a minute in the first half, and I’ll give the K-State Wildcats credit. They’re up by five, and they’ve done a good job drawing fouls against the Kentucky Wildcats.

I’ve been under the weather today, dealing with the norovirus that’s been going around here. Dane caught it down in Florida, brought it home, and it’s been circulating throughout the family since. Lisa has probably been hurt by it most of all, getting her backside kicked by this bug for more than a couple of days now.

Caught me starting last night, and kept me home today, had to reschedule a couple of days of my class for next week.

I’ve still got a headache, and some stomach cramps, but I’m not nearly as bad off now as my wife is. I wonder if it just gets to some people differently.

Anyway, tomorrow Kansas plays Clemson, I’ve got to try and suck it up and run into work to pick up my backpack and stuff. I need my stuff, have to focus on getting ready for my class in another week.

Hope life is treating you well.

Peace y’all.

Day 19,908

OK, I need to take a few minutes and crank this missive out before I head out.

Dane was sick, Lisa is now sick, looks like Gracie is sick, and it’s simply a matter of time before whatever bug is going around sneaks up and punches me in the gut as well, leaving me spewing the foul residuals from either end of this mortal coil.

My class went well today, and I’ve got an appointment here in KC tonight for dinner.

I’m feeling ok at the moment. I have a slight headache, and I’m wondering if the intermittent burbling in my gut is from sickness or the anxiety of knowing that I’m about to get afflicted with this likely influenza bug.

Don’t mess around with the flu.

So, I’m going to go have dinner, gas up my wife’s ride and spend the next 13 hours hoping that whatever is going around doesn’t lay me up. I’ve got a class to teach, and I can’t teach it while I’m sitting on a toilet.

I’m a little short of my two hundred word goal right at the moment, so I’m going to just tap into the thought stream and write a few things down that may or may not make any sense whatsoever.

Peace y’all.

Day 19,907

It’s Tuesday afternoon, and I’m getting ready to wrap things up for another day of teaching my Azure infrastructure class. There are definitely times that I feel that some aspects of this technology is kind of hanging out there at the very border of my ability, but then again, I find a way to recover and achieve a modicum of success.

I’m tired.

I would rather be shopping for riding lawn mowers and a new grill.

I’m sure there are things you would rather be doing as well. Although, I am pleased someone is reading this.

The good news today is my mom is feeling better. They performed a little procedure to remove the port from her neck that they were using for dialysis, and she gets to return home tomorrow. I’m sure my brother, my dad, and certainly the dogs will be happy to see mom come home.

I’ve been in touch with one of my old partners-in-crime from the trainer community. Jerry is doing a brief stint here in town, and we’re going to catch a bit to eat tomorrow night over at one of the better BBQ joints here in Kansas City, Q39 in Overland Park. It will be the second time that one of my old trainer friends and I have dined over there. Never a disappointment.

That’s all I’ve got for now. I’m kind of hoping that the part two of “Jackie Robinson” is on PBS tonight. I enjoyed part one, and it was quite an eye-opener. Lisa and I talked about it, and remarked that it’s hard to believe that all of the events depicted were just seventy years ago.

Until next time…

Peace y’all.

Day 19,906

It’s a Monday night, kids, and grampa is sitting, writing, and watching a public television documentary on Jackie Robinson.

For the casual reader, it should be readily apparent that I’m an old white guy. I have lived my entire life with a degree of privilege. I know it’s real. A number of my peers think white privilege is a myth or some sort of manifestation of some white guilt. I’m telling you right here and now. In my day and age, white privilege is real. When it comes to any number of programs, opportunities, chances to break out and get ahead, white folks have were born in the front of the line.

The only thing I can do moving forward is keep that in mind, and make sure the decisions I make are fair.

I’m not too proud of certain realities of my genealogy. There were some pretty foul individuals in the tree that led to me.

All I know first hand is the love given me by my parents, grandparents, and siblings.

I don’t know how I would act or how I would behave if confronted by that select set of ancestors.

I might be better off not knowing.

Peace y’all.

Day 19,905

Hey gang, old Grampa Bob here, throwing down a few sentences before I call it a night on a Sunday in March.

It’s been interesting. Watched some more basketball, as I am a huge college basketball fan. Not so much NBA, for some reason, but who knows, I might develop a taste for it after the college season is over. Or not.

Just about the time that college basketball is over, the Royals start their season, so I think I’ll stick to the Royals come the first part of April.

I’m going to be busy this week, teaching a class on Microsoft’s Azure Cloud Services. One of my favorite “moving target” classes. I have a lot of respect for instructors that teach the same thing week in and week out, they likely do a better job adapting to the constant changes that pop up mysteriously in the Azure dashboard. I try to get in and review them from time to time, but sometimes you just roll with it… and that can lead o occasional exclamation, “That’s new!”.

Hope all is well with you, no matter who you are, where you are, and when you are.

Peace y’all.

Day 19,904

So, cutting to the chase tonight here in Larryville…

Dane is currently on a bus, about to endure a straight-through express bus with limited stops surrounded by a bunch of sick classmates with half-full barf bags.

Kansas defeated Seton Hall to make it to the Sweet 16 in Omaha. We’ll have to wait and see who we play yet.

I figured out how to make a couple of different things in the Instant Pot. My corned beef turned out passable, and I look forward to my next corned beef brisket. I will aspire to continuous improvement.

Other than that, I’m particularly worried about Dane’s band trip. A lot of sick kids, with a couple kids I know requiring some elevated attention. Both of them are friends of Dane, either through school or sports.

I hope the trip home is bearable for Dane. I can’t imagine what that might seem like.

Kansas is going to the Sweet 16 again. It would be quite a feat if they could win three more in a row.

It’s at this point in the blog that I start to blather on about this and that in a poorly orchestrated effort to get to two hundred words, but then again, every now and then it works and I achieve my goal.

Peace, y’all.

Day 19,903

It’s Friday night, March the 16th. I’ve got some corned beef and cabbage ready for the pressure cooker tomorrow, and we’re hoping Kansas finds themselves heading to the Sweet 16.

It’s been a crazy day. My alma mater, Wichita State, was a 4 seed in the regional, and they found themselves on the wrong side of the final score against Marshall.

Kansas State held on to beat Creighton, Texas tanked, and right now one of the number one seeds (Virginia) is struggling, down twelve to University of Maryland-Baltimore County.

I do love this time of year.

Kansas square off against Seton Hall tomorrow, one of the typical one-versus-eight matchups that are all too common during the second round of the tournament.

I’m going to try my best to stay optimistic.

I need to focus on some things over the weekend, but it will always be a little more challenging during the big games.

Truth be known, this time of year, all the games are important.

So, I plot out my day for tomorrow, the various and sundry errands I need to run. The time management. This, that, and the other thing.

It’s a crazy time of year, and it is all too easy to love.

Peace y’all.

Day 19,902

It’s Thursday night in the country, and Lisa and I are sitting in the living room watching some college basketball. Have been since the middle of the afternoon, and if you ask us if either has taken a nap since the beginning of this little slice of life, we might cover for each other.

She’s napping right now. (Wink)

Kansas won their opening game against the team from Penn. Looks like we’ll face Seton Hall on Saturday. I hope the Jayhawks have a solid chance to proceed, moving on to the Sweet Sixteen.

Oh, and congrats to Loyola of Chicago, draining a three-pointer at the buzzer to knock off Miami and earning the biggest upset win of the tournament so far.

Other than that…

Got one of my laptops repaired. New motherboard.

Went in for my eye exam, that was good. Found out my prescription didn’t really need an update, so I’m using the opportunity to update the prescription in my sunglasses.

After that, I grabbed a bit of lunch at 23rd Street Brewery, choosing that little slice of porcine heaven, the BLT.

I love the sheer volume of bacon they put on that sandwich.

Then it was home to watch basketball. That’s about all I’ve got.

Going to hit the sack here in a few, hoping that it doesn’t hit back.

Peace y’all.

Day 19,901

Last night I wrote my blog very late at night, and prior to the writing of my entry, there may have been some adult distilled beverages involved.

That’s my story, and I’m sticking to it.

I’m not going to go back and change a thing. I thought about it, but I wrote it, it’s a part of my reality, I’m a 54-year-old man that had a couple of drinks with some old friends yesterday, and we had a pretty good time.

After I woke this morning, I went to see my mom in the hospital, and my niece was already there. Good kid.

My sister arrived a little later that morning, and I needed to get back to the house to meet a service tech to replace a motherboard on a laptop.

I’m on the verge of making a decision about our internet access. I like the down speeds from the satellite service, nut the data limits and upload speeds are an obstacle.

The NCAA basketball tournament gets going tomorrow. I’ve got an eye appointment, but after that, I’m all about basketball.

I’m exhausted. Time to hit the sack. I hope there is peace in your corner of the world tonight… I guess that’s just another way of saying…

Peace y’all.
