Day 19,920

OK, so here it is folks… I’ve successfully written 365 blog updates over the course of the last year.

For me, this is a pretty significant achievement in the world of sticking to something and trying to create a good habit.

There have been times that I didn’t have much to say. Some might posit that most of the time I had nothing to say, but that didn’t keep me from talking. Thing is, I know it. I know that there have been times that all I really cared about was hitting that two hundred word mark and calling it a night. Half-assed. Phoned it in. Crap work.

They aren’t all going to be gems.

I guess I need to think a little bit more about things that other people might think is interesting enough to read. In my line of work, there are a lot of things written, but so much of it is as painful to read as a night on the rack.

So, we enter year two. I wonder if I’ve changed at all in the last year, and how much. I don’t know. In some ways, I might be harder, in other ways softer (head? waistline?).

All that really matters is that I keep writing, really.

Gotta keep a chronicle…

Peace y’all.

Day 19,919

Hey gang, it’s Easter, and I hope you guys had a great day, with the appropriate balance of gratitude, religious fervor, and chocolate bunnies.

Yeah, that may have sounded a lot funnier in my head.

I’m a practicing Christian, and if I practiced harder, I might be able to get it right. My wife is a much better Christian and Catholic than I am, and in the vase of religious matters, I turn to her. Anything related to family and faith, I sit down and shut up and my wife can take me to school.

She does that better than I do.

I’m practicing.

We did have a nice Easter, though. Gracie had several of her college friends over this afternoon for a dinner, then we kind of hung out and watched the second half of the women’s national championship game between Notre Dame and Mississippi State. The game was tied at 58, and with 3 seconds left, one of Notre Dame’s players hit an absolute prayer from three-point range to win the game. One of the most amazing shots I have ever seen in a game of that significance. Congrats to Notre Dame.

Back to the real world tomorrow. Teaching Office 365 this week.

Peace y’all.

Day 19,918

OK. Gotta set the stage here a little bit. It is currently halftime between the Villanova Wildcats and the Kansas Jayhawks. KU is getting their asses handed to them at this point, down 15, 47-32.

Now, to be clear, if anybody had told me at the beginning of the season that KU would win their 14th consecutive Big 12 Conference title, win the conference post-season tournament, and make the Final Four, I would have probably looked at somebody like they were crazy.

Yet here we are.

I’m not happy with the way this game is going. Villanova is hitting three-point shots at a pace never before seen in a Final Four game. It’s a little insane.

It’ the kind of insane KU needs to get back into this. We have lived and died by the three all season, and we’ve put up one of the smallest attempt counts I’ve seen from KU all season.

They need to let it fly in the second half.

Getting a few dozen turnovers and foul calls going our way wouldn’t hurt either.

I hope tomorrow I can write to y’all about how relieved I am, and how Kansas staged some incredible comeback that had all of the hallmarks of a classic Final FOur match.

Right now I am not optimistic.

Rock Chalk!

Peace y’all.

Day 19,917

It’s Good Friday, and we’re sitting in the family room, watching an episode of the BBC’s “Sherlock Holmes”. Cumberbatch nailed another one.

I got my new grill today, a quite nice Weber Genesis II E-410, with the copper finish. Tomorrow, we’ll get it broken in correctly, with a variety of meats. I think some burgers, brats, and chicken ought to get us off to the right start.

Went to Good Friday mass tonight. Lots of getting up and down. Not a great experience for the old, fat guy with the two reconstructed knees.

We’ve got to get some cleaning done around here tomorrow. Typical house cleaning stuff.

Right now I wish I had attained my two hundred word count.  I’m tired, and sitting on around a hundred and thirty words as I type this, kind of hoping that another seventy words will mysteriously appear, some sort of gift from the muse of writing.

I have no idea what the ancient Greek muse of writing was, but I sure wish I was in her favor at this point.

I’m not really creating anything at this point, just dong some bizarre stream of thought in a pathetic attempt to get my blog entry completed.

Bingo… 203 words.

Peace y’all.

Day 19,916

Hey kids, fat old grampa Bob here.

I think I have my internet access situation resolved, for the most part. Mercury Wireless was able to get everything mounted and connected, and I installed a new wireless mesh wifi network here at the house. Download and upload speeds are manageable, and I don’t have to worry about a 50 GB limit that leads to download speeds that are jut about useless.

Tomorrow could be an exciting day as well, as I get my new grill delivered. I also need to run by the eye doctor’s clinic to get my shades picked up. My glasses are fine, but my sunglasses were due for an update. That will certainly help my driving, golfing, and other outdoor activities.

Now that we’ve got that stuff resolved, we can go back to watching shows on the XBOX and the Roku systems without having to worry about the darn data plan. We might saturate the pipe, but at least it will be due to our collective actions rather than some arbitrary data limit.

We’ll keep the satellite, for now, use it for streaming in the living room. If we can keep the traffic isolated, it’ll help, especially this summer.

That’s all I’ve got for now.

Peace, y’all.

Day 19,915

Hey, I’m started to get a little excited about changing my internet service provider. Tomorrow is the day!

I still need to trim a branch, though.

I’m back in the office today, kids, finishing up the class I missed last week when I came down ill. Three of my seven students joined in, although two of them had conflicts pop up in the afternoon, so it was down to me and one guy in the afternoon. Just about wrapped up her now.

Thinking about heading over to Microcenter to pick up a Ubiquity wireless mesh solution for the house now that I’ll have unlimited (unmetered) internet access around the house. It will be easier to get things spread out about the property that way, including taking care of Gracie out in the barn.

Now, the tough decision… what do I change the wireless access SSID to? I’ll change the name on the HughesNet system to something innocuous, and I’ll switch the new mesh system to our old family SSID just to maintain continuity.

Even if the name is a bit of a joke.

Anyway, hope your day is going well. I’ve still got some things to take care of here at the job, but after that, it’s Microcenter, then Home Depot, then back to the house.

(I’m excited!)

Peace y’all.

Day 19,914

It’s Tuesday night, my future grandkids, and once again, the old man is feeling the day.

Two more days before we add the additional internet service provider.  Just started our new month, and I’m thinking we’ll leave the HughesNet just for bandwidth for on-demand and Netflix.

Seriously, though, that HughesNet bill for our usage from February 27 through today was ridiculous. You manage your first 50 gigabytes, but after that, you’re paying more than just a little bit extra.

No… you’re paying ridiculous. 3 bucks a gig. And we go through 150-200 GB per month.

My mistake.

Tomorrow I head back to work to try and close out the last part of my 20533 class from last week, two students for tomorrow, and we’ll try to get through the remaining three modules tomorrow. I can get any issues resolved on Thursday afternoon if I need to. There are two guys, though, and they’re smart, so it’s pretty reasonable to get things wrapped up in one day for the two of them.

Dane and I are kicking it, watching a little “Forged in Fire” at the end of the day. Someday, maybe we’ll set up a little forge and hammer out a couple of blades.

That could be fun.

That’s all I’ve got for tonight.

Peace y’all.

Day 19,913

OK, kids, here is it is, my life and the unfrilled truth of it… I’m tired tonight.

Today has been a gray day, pretty much a light sprinkle coming down the entire day. The rain is hard enough to soften up the soft spots in the yard, and mud is readily available pretty much everywhere you look here at the house.

Lisa made a very fine dinner, chili and cinnamon rolls, and that is becoming a bit of a staple around here, proving to be popular not only with the family but also her graduate students.

I did a couple of loads of laundry and could stand to take a few minutes and put the rest of my clean clothes away, and maybe get one more load going tonight.

But even with the laundry, the weather, the chili, and the cinnamon rolls, all conversation still takes that circuitous pattern right back to the most popular topic of the day… the Final Four.

We’re still a little giddy.

It’s nice to have one of the best basketball programs in the country.

I hope one day that the KU women can get back on top of the women’s basketball world. That would make this time of year even more enjoyable.

That’s it for tonight. I need to get a good night’s sleep.

Peace y’all.

Day 19,912

OK, if this is going to be a chronicle of sorts for descendants of mine that are yet to be born, y’all need to know one thing about the day and place that I live.

We live in Lawrence, Kansas, more accurately, rural Douglas County.

My wife is a professor at the University of Kansas, and both of my daughters attend the University of Kansas. Dane is pretty sure he’ll go to KU as well.

And basketball.

This community of KU, both local and extended, is, for the most part, nutty about college basketball.

Tonight, Kansas advanced to the Final Four of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament.

Our people are very happy tonight.

My heart was racing there for a while. Took me awhile to get all of that adrenaline out of my system. Seriously. My heart was working on an accelerated calypso beat.

I’m happy for this group of players, and the KU fans. It’s been since 2012 since KU’s last run, and that one ended badly against a pretty dominant Kentucky team.

OK.

Bleah.

This will be a pretty crazy week around here now as people overthink and speculate about the outcome of the games next weekend.

It’s going to be a lot of fun.

Peace y’all.

Day 19,911

OK, a little bit of a rant tonight.

When we moved out to the country, I struggled with our internet issues, thinking that my city cable provider would be able to get the same coverage out in the county. I did check multiple times and verified that they could provide access. It wasn’t until the install appointment that they said I was S.O.L.

Now I have this satellite-based service. Down speeds are fine. 50 Mbps. Upload speeds are slow, less than 1 Mbps.

The issue has become the bandwidth limitations. We’re limited to 50 Gigabits per month at 50 Megabits per second. After that, speed drops to less than 1 Mbps. You can buy additional bandwidth for 3 dollars per gigabyte.

We’re a family that goes through data like crap through a goose, and we’re still running our smartphones through the phone connection rather than the family wifi connection.

So, HughesNet satellite-based internet service might not be the best choice when you go through 200-250 gigabits per month as a family. And I have no opportunity to cancel, as I’m tied into a 2-year contract.

This next Thursday, we’re getting another service installed in parallel. 30 Mbps, but no limits on bandwidth.

I know HughesNet says they don’t limit your bandwidth, but dropping that pipe from 50 Mbps to less than 1 Mbps is ridiculous.

I was suspicious when I bought another 25-gigabyte token, and just as soon as it showed up on my account, there was already another 25 megabytes chunked out of it.

My HughesNet bill for this past month is going to be outrageous. For the first time and the last time. Maybe somebody will read this and decide HughesNet is not the way to go. Maybe HughesNet will read this and change their bandwidth policies. No matter to me. I’m going a different direction, as it only makes sense to do so.

Lesson learned.

Peace y’all.
