Lost in Space was one of those show we’d watch after school. The Robinsons, with Dr. Smith, and the Robot were part of my steady afterschool fare.
Today I wrapped up Netflix’s reboot of the original Lost in Space series. There were some notable changes to the characters as well as the plotline. First of all, the scientific leader of the family is Maureen Robinson. She’s a Ph.D. in an engineering discipline, I’d guess mechanical or aerospace. John Robinson is no longer the Guy Williams type – he’s a Navy SEAL, played by Toby Stephens, the son of one of the grand dames of the stage and screen, Dame Maggie Smith. It was the first time I recall seeing Toby Stephens in something interesting since he was a featured baddy in a James Bond movie twenty years ago.
Jonathan Smith played the over-the-top Dr. Smith in the original series, half saboteur, half medical doctor, one hundred percent self-serving. In the new series, he has been replaced with Parker Posey… and they’ve gone a little off the rails with that character. She’s adopted the persona of a real doctor, but in reality, it’s more appropriate to describe her as a mental patient with some serious issues.
